It is spring here in the Pacific Northwest. We have some sunny days now and then – glorious and bright – but we have a deserved reputation for rain and it has been very dark a lot. These are the times where I look for color in my projects. And, with spring cleaning, I am looking to find those colors in my stash rather than by a trip to my LYS.

color wheel 1

I decided to use up some Blue Moon Fiber Arts Woobu (60% Merino and 40% Bamboo). At some point I had planned a sweater and then dropped the plan, but I thought it would make nice scarves. I wound a little stripe in the warp from the same color family. Then, because I had warped enough for 3 scarves and the first one was boring, I got out my color wheel (see above). I started rooting around in my stash for some good colors, concentrating on those either in the same family or tertiary colors that would work.

pinks teals and oranges

It was easy to decide to use the pinks for weft – they were perfect (Lorna’s Laces Shepherds Worsted). I also found some good teal and copper colors that would have looked lovely. I used some variegated sock yarn with those same colors to make a contrast stripe. I actually had fun playing because these are definitely not my personal colors. As you can see, I tend to the blues and teals in my clothing (no, I didn’t remove the other colors – that is all there is!) and knitting. Give me a teal and I can go to town. Maroons, pinks, oranges, etc. and I really have to work at it. I do like that our local bike shop clearly has instincts in a similar direction.

As we move into spring, I am increasingly drawn to the brighter colors in my work. This is my first color wheel experiment – being methodical and planning my approach rather than going for something that just looks good to me at the moment. I had fun with it. Maybe next time I will weave or knit something in yellow… or not… For now – we are having a sun break!
